Free Falling

Hello everyone,

The fall is here and I guess the chill in the air is free for all to enjoy. It is hard to believe that camp ended almost two months ago- so if you are still counting we are in week 15. (I saw someone mentioned week 14 and now I am in the lead.) I was just enjoying some pictures that were posted on Facebook. Every photo reminded me of another great Campus Kids moment. Luckily, I do a lot of tours in the off-season, so new funny camp moments happen all the time. Like on Sunday when I learned that one of our campers hates wild turkeys. Hearing that made my mind race with many different ideas. Maybe her bunk group name should be "the wild turkeys", or we should have a Thanksgiving theme meal, or a Thanksgiving dance theme. I like the dance theme idea and think I would make a solid Pilgrim.

People that have toured Minisink seem to be loving the place. I am really excited on so many levels. I love how easy it is to go from place to place at Minisink. Over the years some of our lovely CKCTers have avoided some activities because of the hills. Well, the hills are gone and I expect for the basketball and tennis courts to see lots of action. Tricia also told me about another popular Minisink activity, on the outskirts of the amazingly large sports field complex is a small frog catching pond. Well, I am not much into frogs anymore, but many years ago, at camp, I won a frog racing contest. At my old stomping grounds in North Carolina, many of us campers would catch frogs on the first day of camp and have a grand tournament, kind of like our newcomb tournaments but totally different. Anyway, my lucky Frog (Larry the Leaper) won all his races in 1977. It was a good year. My prize was having our cabin be first in line for canteen. (That was a major prize back when I went to camp.) So I cannot wait to search for my new lucky frog. I am hoping Jake will help me because I might not be fast enough anymore to catch one.

I am really looking forward to getting to know all the existing Minisink folks. I already know a bunch of you. A few of the Minisink staff members go back to the old school days of CK at South Kent. This weekend I was able to meet David Harary during one of the tours. He was very cool and very tall. I am sure the reunion will be another great opportunity to meet and greet. By the way, our Campus Kids reunion for 2009 CKCT and Minisink campers will be on Saturday, December 5th. Invitations will be mailed out next month.

Well stay warm and enjoy the upcoming color changes. I know the trees around Root Beer Lake will be stunning.

Touring at Minisink

Hello everyone,

Last Sunday was our first open house at Minisink. It was a picture perfect day. We had a bunch of families come to see the cabins and the lake. I was so excited about the positive feedback from everyone. Minisink is really a beautiful place, and I highly encourage you to come take a look. I have heard some gossip that Campus Kids is creating a mega-camp with over 400 campers. That is not the case at all. We are planning to keep Campus Kids with our usual number of campers. I have a feeling that some sessions will sell out very quickly, so contact us soon and hop on one of our next tour dates: 10/3, 10/4, 10/10, 10/11, 10/17. The tours run at 11:00 AM, 12:30 PM and 2:00 PM.

Someone sent me an email asking if Campus Kids Minisink is all about nature and limited sports. Campus Kids will continue to run all of our usual sports activities. In fact, the sports area is incredible. There is room on the professional fields for many large activities to happen at the same time. I think one of the highlights is a full 120 yards of a football field with goal posts. (Big Cat will be very happy.) Of course we will have soccer, lacrosse, basketball, clinics, softball, tennis, newcomb, ga-ga, volleyball, four way newcomb, floor hockey, golf, Australian rules football, rugby, capture the flag, cricket, and everything else we have always done. Theo and I were scouting out the softball field and lefties are going to have a huge advantage in home run derby. The right field porch is about 200 feet away. Left field is about 300 feet and I think some of our sluggers will have a good chance of pulling a few HRs that way. Now CF is going to be unreachable. It would be like hitting a homer from the new Yankee stadium to the old one.

So is it too early to begin a count down for CK2010? It will be our 20th anniversary. Maybe that should be a dance theme? The Anniversary dance! I like it.

Well September is almost done already. The Jets and Giants are both 2-0. The Yankees are getting ready for the playoffs. These are all signs of fall, but the calendar seems to fly by very quickly. Halloween will be here before you know it and then into Turkey day. After that, we will all be together at the reunion and then winter approaches rapidly and the new year begins. Once we get into January then we can really start the countdown. A countdown to what will be the most amazing summer ever!

See you next week.

Campus Kids

So the big news went out last week to all the Campus Kids CT families. I have heard from many of you and the initial feedback has been very positive. Now I know that some of you are shocked and still processing this big change. I do want to tell you that everything happened very quickly, and Kathryn and I wanted you to know as soon as possible. I am very excited that this Sunday we have our first group of families coming to see Minisink. It really is beautiful and the facilities are amazing. We are going to run all of our favorite CKCT activities and then add tons of boating including sailing, more fishing, the ropes course, biking, the blob, the aqua zip line into the lake, and so much more.

Living in the cabins will certainly be different then the dorm life. Minisink cabins are clustered in a village setting. I can picture all of our age groups really enjoying hanging out in their villages. There will be lots of space to throw around a ball or frisbee or chill out on a picnic table while playing a guitar. I am really looking forward to this type of setting and feel like it will only help to bring everyone closer together.

Campus Kids will always be our special Monday through Friday place. The success of our program comes from having a great group of campers and a very talented and outgoing staff. Together we create the fun and the memories. I know that this will continue at CK Minisink.

We are less then 10 months away from rocket launches, capture the flag, games of manhunt (which will be awesome at Minisink), dances, carnival, waterworld, homerun derby, camper vs. counselor challenge matches, creative art projects, music jams, incredible drama shows, talent shows, archery, gold rush (yes the gold of Maximus Carlsson has made its way to Minisink---and gold rush will rock at CKM), campfires, blobbing, fun, friendships, and the best summer of our lives.

If you are interested in seeing Minisink please call us and setup a tour soon. Because of the merge, spaces will fill up much faster than usual.

Enjoy the nice fall weather and talk to you next week.

Half Time

We have just finished our first four weeks of the summer of 2009. It really has been a blast. It was hard to say goodbye yesterday. I was working with the buses and I didn't get to the fields on time. I missed our goodbye lines and I was very disappointed in that happening. I am so proud of our campers. CKCT really is a special place and I feel great sharing incredible moments of happiness with everyone.

There is still plenty of excitement ahead over the next few weeks. I am really looking forward to carnival and gold rush. They are two of my favorite activities. I know that David Salzman wants a re-match in the boxing ring. Well, I am going to retire as the undefeated champion. Plus the boxing is being replaced by another camper driven activity.

Running a camp program is sometimes like being on a roller coaster, lots of twists and turns and plenty of action. There is never a dull moment, except on Thursday of last week when I ran late into a quiet dining room towards the end of wave B. I was sitting in my usual spot at an empty table. Luckily, Danielle and Amy sang me a special song. ("All By Myself") Well, the singing was off key and dreadful. I guess the Amy/Danielle twins have some other talents. They have yet to be discovered. Stay tuned for any progress with those strange creatures. Listening to them sing was like going through a large loop and into a sudden scary dark tunnel.

The fun of CKCT will continue over the next fours weeks. I am looking forward to spending time in so many different activities. I have to bring baby Jake to a rocket launch on Friday. I am really looking forward to getting into a few more softball, basketball, and capture the flag games. Kendra, I have not forgotten about our softball challenge. I am ready for your fastball. Make sure you throw strikes. I have been so impressed about the great sportsmanship I witness everyday at camp. I love seeing how kind our campers are to each other.

I wanted to mention how great the Lamoy festival was the other Monday night. I know Chris, Paul, the SAs, and lots of other people put hours of work into the planning and running of the show. Well, your hard work paid off and the results were outstanding. Luckily the weather cooperated. All the stations were very impressive and I think everyone had a rocking good time.

On the drama front, High School Musical was really terrific. I saw the second showing and it was a blast. (Lia sorry I missed you in the first performance) Elizabeth does an amazing job at pulling these complex shows off in a short amount of time. The live music from Paul, Chris, Adam, Leo and Marisa was unbelievable. Jake, Ronan and Oaksey were super funny during the auditions. Abby did some really fancy ballet moves and of course Nigel worked his magic as only Nigel can. I was really happy and proud of all of our campers. Everyone did such a great job. It seemed like you were having so much fun. Keep up the great work and I cannot wait to take my seat for the Lion King Performance.

Fingers are getting tired so I will call it quits for now. See you in a few.

Week 2 @ Camp

I had put blogging on hold for a while. No excuses except that the spring is a busy time of the year. So now summer is upon us with or without the full time sunshine. So I am back to bi-weekly blogging status and hope to keep posting throughout camp and beyond.

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July holiday. The sandy shores were not an option for me, but we did have some family fun. Tod's fake invitation was just not what the doctor ordered. However, Jake did love the evening fireworks, but not the after fireworks traffic.

Week one of CKCT was amazing. It feels like the summer of 2008 just ended and after a short break we are back into all the crazy camp fun. I am really enjoying all the new camp songs people are singing this year. I am really into Baby Shark and Yo My Moms. Those two songs swim in my head all day. I love to sing Baby Shark to Baby Jake while giving him a bath. He enjoys all the hand motions, especially shark attack. Never a dry time during shark attack.

I think the summer of 2009 is going to be remembered as the summer of special events. We have so many different things happening every week. Tonight is Chutes and Ladders. I am very excited to see how this will play out. I am sure it will be a fun time for everyone.

Our second camp session is already starting next week. Water world and Apache are just around the corner. Apache is one of my favorite activities at camp. It takes hours and hours to prepare and only 40 minutes to run. It is often the most humorous time at camp. Another camp tradition is happening very soon. Our first weekend trip or WEA is just 10 days away. We are taking a large group to Hershey Park, a minor league baseball game (Yankees AAA), and a day of water excitement in the Poconos. I know everyone is very excited.

I always brag about the campers and staff of CKCT. You never let me down. I cannot think of a better group of people to be silly with during the summer. Keep up all the hard work and especially the CK smiles.

Cheers!

Marching towards the summer

Put on your hiking boots, it is March time. Camp is getting closer and closer. Hopefully we are done with snow for a long while. I am predicting and asking for the next snow fall to be on December 23rd. A nice covering for the Christmas holiday without causing any travel problems. I think that would be ideal. Don't you agree? I am not sure what makes camp directors think and talk about the weather so much. (It might have something to do with loving rainy day schedules at camp!)

Well it has been a very busy time in the CKCT office. Campers and families that are already enrolled should expect to see round one of camp paperwork any moment. I am sure I just heard a few of you cheering. Camp sends out the medical information this time of the year because we know how hard getting those Doctors' appointments can be sometimes. Well, hopefully you can get in early and take care of these important forms quickly and painlessly.

So what else is going on? I am glad you asked. Kathryn, Tricia, Jani and myself have been working on the final "Weekend Adventure" Trips. The inside scoop is that we are working on putting together another Hershey Park excursion. We are looking at adding a new twist to this trip. We are also exploring another trip to Boston. We heard from many of you that Boston is a highlight WEA. So we are seeing if we can spend both Saturday and Sunday in the Boston area. Sounds like lots of chances to eat "Chowdah." The third trip is being planned as I type. I do not want to give any hints about this trip until we get closer to finalizing the details. I will say that we searched for something based on your suggestions over the years. Be patient, for we will be sending out details in a few short weeks.

Next week we are heading down to Atlantic City for our annual camp conference. I have been attending the Tri-State camp convention for approximately 20 years. It is always an amazing learning experience. Campus Kids is a proud member of the ACA. (American Camp Association) They are the organization that runs the camp fair in Atlantic City and serves as the back bone for the camp industry. For several days, staff members from all three Campus Kids programs will attend sessions and classes related to running great camps. There is also a huge exhibit hall to shop for some camp goodies. It is a very exciting time where we get to mingle and share ideas with thousands of other camp professionals.

Well I always enjoy sharing some quick thoughts about CKCT. However, I do need to go and get back to work. Enough of me pretending to be witty and a fast typer. Really I am using more than two fingers to create this mess. I hope everyone is well and warm.

See you soon at camp.

Snow and Ice

I was giving a tour at camp on Saturday and walked past the sand volleyball court. I was telling a potential new family how popular volleyball and newcomb are at camp. Of course the court is completely covered with snow which inspired me to mention that we no longer play "snow volleyball" during the summer. My attempt at humor got a small chuckle (In my mind I heard a huge laugh)from the 11 year old potential camper. I thought it was very clever. I am sure that somewhere Kathryn is shaking her head at another cheesy line from her unfunny husband. Anyway, walking around campus during the winter is strange. I kept looking for some green grass and some happy campers. Luckily, I had a photo album with me to show some smiling faces and camp in action. So a few moments later, I am standing near the flag pole near the sports fields. The temperature is 20 degrees and the wind is really blowing. I showed the family a picture of Waterworld and Carnival. I was so cold that I could barely hold the pictures. I did start to feel warmer as I was explaining how exciting Waterworld and Carnival are. I cannot wait for all this snow and ice to be gone. Enough with this winter mess already and bring on the games of camp!

This is always a very exciting part of the year for Kathryn and myself. Campers are enrolling daily and groups are filling up. I really enjoy the process of putting together the staff team. For all you sports fans, I sometimes feel like the general manager of a championship team. Campus Kids is lucky that we have so many returning superstars every year. I know our staff is so dedicated to making camp the most amazing place. I can already tell you that 2009 is going to be a special summer. The excitement level is already building. There have been many new ideas and additions to camp already discussed. I am going to share them with you in future blogs. I know the suspense is painful, but good things come to those who wait.

This week we are starting to discuss our Weekend Adventure plans for the 2009 summer. If you are new to CK, then let me explain a little about Weekend Adventures or WEA. During the summer we plan 3 weekend trips to amazing places. The trips are the connector weekends in-between weeks 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8. Past summer trips have included: Boston, White Water Rafting, Hershey, Cooperstown, Dorney Park, Six Flags, Lake George and lots more. The trips do change every year and we do repeat some of everyone's favorites. The trips depart on Friday afternoon and return Monday morning around the same time that our regular buses arrive back to camp. We stay in nice hotels and really pack a lot of activities into a short amount of time. I love the "WEA" trips and they are always some of my top highlights every summer. Feel free to send along any suggestions or ideas to either Kathryn or myself. We love getting your input and feedback and want to make sure we have the best trips for this summer.

I love writing this blog. I hope I am not boring anyone to tears. I will write again soon, but I need to get back to work. Be well and stay warm.

Happy 2009

Hello everyone. December sure went by quickly. For Campus Kids CT, the month started off with our 2008 reunion. The reunion always seems to end too soon, but it was great seeing everyone. I really enjoyed our new reunion place in Elmsford. There was so much to do. It felt like a morning of camp. If you have any fun pictures from the day, send them to the office and we will post them on the Campus Kids Web Site. I didn't get a chance to try the Laser Tag or the Climbing Wall. I heard they were a lot of fun. I did go on a few of those indoor rides and realized that turning around in cirlces is not as much fun as it was 35 years ago.

Then the holidays kicked in. I am a total cookie monster and I now must dust off the treadmill again. (I need to be in shape for camp and any challengers in the boxing ring---bring it on Mark Hill) Kathryn makes some yummy holiday cookies so really any extra pounds found during December is really her fault. (Just Kidding)

So the page of the calendar has finally turned to 2009. This is a good time to start your camp countdowns. The office has been very busy. I am currently in the final stages of "Staff Assistant" interviews and the leadership team will be taking shape very shortly. Kathryn and I will start working on the bulk of the staff over the next few weeks. I have heard from so many people from last year. It looks like we are going to have a great return of staff from last summer and the largest number of former campers on staff. For those of you keeping track at home, we also have a few of our all-star staff members returning from previous summers. It is all very exciting.

I did want to talk a little bit about our "Staff Assistant" program. We had 29 people apply this year for first year SA positions. That is a new record! I wish I could hire everyone, but we only have spaces for 6 to 8. I am honored that so many people love camp so much and want to pay the experience forward to others. I was doing a tour the other day and the mother of the potential new camper asked me a common question. "What makes your camp so special?" I always find the answer to this question very simple and easy. It is an answer I beleive with all my heart. I always state that, "Campus Kids has the most amazing collection of Campers and Staff. Our program has little to do with the faciltiy and the grounds and everything to do with the hearts and smiles of our group." I am sure that those of you who love CKCT know exactly what I am talking about.

So as another snowfall is about to attack Connecticut this weekend, keep thinking about the summer. There are several pages to turn on that calendar util June arrives, but it will go by very quickly. So until the next blog stay warm and happy shoveling. Brad
